The fortnightly appointment

Abeerdeen Beach clean-up

The increase of pollution causes tons of plastic, nets, and other rubbish to wash up on Aberdeen beach daily. Our mission is to organise fortnightly beach cleans to collect and remove as much rubbish as possible from the beach to avoid it to go back into the ocean, and potentially harming marine wildlife.

During the year we organise beach cleans in collaboration with other University societies and sports club, and other external conservation charities in Aberdeen. Our beach cleans are a community wide event, with many memberes of the community stopping to help and ask questions. So if you see us on the beach come and join us, we will have spare gloves and bags for you!

Our beach cleans were also featured in the Green Times December Edition 2016, a local environmental journal. We have also been nominated for the Clean-up Champion EcoCity Award 2017.

ABERDEEN TECH FEST

We have been participating to the Aberdeen Tech Fest for the past two years . Last year our stand proposed a new innovative way to recycle plastic and create animals out of plastic. We also carried out a kid's competition to see who could create the best animal/ most imaginative marine-related creature using recycled material.

THE FUTURE

SCHOOL PROJECT

To promote the future of the protection of our ocean, we are striving to further improve our Schools Outreach Project, which was successfully launched in 2017, to engage with local primary schools to inspire young people to get involved with marine conservation and science.

MORE VOLUNTEERING

We are currently tring to establish a closer relationship with conservation charities in Aberdeen to advertise and promote volunteering opportunities for our members.

We hope to form a close relationship with the Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre this year.

STEM AMBASSADORS

We are currently trying to get the society involved with the STEM ambassador program. This will be an amazing opportunity for our members to develop transferable skills to help them with their future careers.
